palmate (digitate) Of leaves, compound with 2 or more leaflets arising from the top of a stalk or rachis and spreading, like the fingers of a hand. The main nerves of a leaf may be palmate, a situation in which several more or less equally large ones diverge along the blade from an origin at the top of the petiole. Such leaves commonly have a divided margin (i.e. are palmately lobed).
