cork
cork (phellem) In woody plants, a layer of protective
tissue that forms below the
epidermis. It comprises dead cells, derived from the cork
cambium (
phellogen), and coated with a waxy substance (
suberin) that renders them waterproof. Cork develops abundantly in the bark layer of certain plants, e.g.
Quercus suber (cork oak), and is removed for commercial use. See also
QUERCUS.
