chlorine
chlorine (Cl) An element that is necessary for normal plant growth. Its main role seems to be that of controlling
turgor, but it may also be involved in the light reaction of
photosynthesis. If plants are deficient in chloride ions, wilting occurs and the young leaves become blue-green and shiny. Later they become bronze-coloured and chlorotic (see
CHLOROSIS).
