cephalodium

cephalodium A specialized region in a lichen thallus in which occur cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that are capable of carrying out nitrogen fixation. Lichens that have cephalodia have a green phycobiont (i.e. a member of the Chlorophyta) in the remainder of the thallus.
