carbohydrate A generic term for molecules that have a basic empirical formula of C
x(H
2O)
y and that are aldehyde or ketone derivatives of polyhydroxyl alcohols. They are normally classified as mono-, oligo-, or poly-saccharides, depending upon whether they are single sugars, short-chain molecules, or large polymers respectively.
