age 1. An interval of geologic time that is a subdivision of an
epoch and may itself be subdivided further into chrons. An age takes its name from the stage that is the corresponding chronostratigraphic unit and carries the suffix ‘-an’ or ‘-ian’. When used formally, the word is capitalized (e.g. Givetian Age).
2. An informal term denoting a period marked by some specific feature (e.g. Carboniferous coal-swamp age).
