Strychnos (family Loganiaceae) A genus of trees and woody climbers that have hook-like tendrils. The fruit is a berry, some fruits containing seeds that are exceedingly poisonous, owing to the presence of alkaloids. Curare is obtained from S. toxifera of tropical America, strychnine from S. nux-vomica of tropical Asia. There are about 190 species occurring in the tropics.
