Resedaceae A family, mostly of herbs, with alternate leaves and flowers borne in long spikes or racemes. The flowers are irregular, with parts in fours to sevens, but the stamens are often numerous. The 2–6 carpels are superior, and often remain open at their tips, a very unusual feature. Reseda odorata (mignonette) has fragrant flowers and is often cultivated. There are 6 genera, with some 75 species, centred in the Mediterranean area, but extending into Africa, western USA, and India.
