Ptilotus (family Amaranthaceae) A genus of herbs and shrubs which are found in both arid and humid habitats. They have entire, alternate or opposite leaves without stipules. The flowers are usually bisexual and regular, with 4 or 5 segments of the perianth which are often fused. They are axillary and solitary, or in cymes. There are 1–5 stamens and a uniovular, superior ovary. In several species the flower head is dry, membranaceous, and colourless; in other species flowers are bright and showy. The fruit is a nut or berry and the seed has a tough, shiny testa. A few species are cultivated as ornamentals. There are about 100 species, endemic (see ENDEMISM) to Australia.
