Flammulina (family Tricholomataceae) A genus of fungi that form mushroom-like fruit bodies. In F. velutipes (velvet shank), the cap is slimy and reddish to orange or yellow; the stipe is central and velvety. This species forms clusters of fruit bodies in winter on the trunks and dead wood of broad-leaved trees; it is cultivated for food (e.g. in Japan, where it is known as enokitake).
