Claviceps

Claviceps (order Clavicipitales) A genus of fungi that are typically parasitic on grasses. C. purpurea is the causal agent of ergot. This species forms elongated, curved, purple-black sclerotia which replace the grain in an infected host plant. A wide range of grasses and cereals can be affected.
