Calvatia (order Lycoperdales) A genus of fungi which includes the giant puffball Calvatia gigantea (also known as Lycoperdon giganteum or Langermannia gigantea). Fruit bodies of this species are usually 30–50 cm across, but specimens measuring up to 1.5 m across have been recorded. The colour is initially white, becoming yellowish to brown. The flesh is white, becoming olive-brown and powdery as spores develop. It is found in grassland, woods, gardens, etc., and is edible when young.
