Artocarpus (family Moraceae) A genus of small to medium trees that yield latex from the bark and useful timber. The leaves have big stipules and are commonly divided. Male flowers are borne in catkins, female flowers in heads. The fruit is multiple, formed on the fleshy receptacle by concrescent achenes surrounded by a fleshy perianth, often cauliflorous, and gigantic, in A. heterophyllus (jak or jackfruit) attaining 1 × 0.6 m. The fruit of A. altilis (breadfruit) is starchy and bread-like when roasted. There are 31 species, occurring in tropical South-east Asia.
