war dog a dog, usually a larger dog such as a German Shepherd or mastiff, trained to perform military duties such as sentry duty, scouting, the carrying of messages, or the direct attack of enemy personnel. War dogs have also been employed to find mines, booby traps, and other explosives and to carry explosive charges beneath enemy vehicles.
