unconditional surrender the surrender of a military force or nation without being able to set any limits on the subsequent actions of the victorious power. Following the
Casablanca Conference in January 1943, the Allies announced an unconditional surrender policy with respect to the Axis powers, that is, the Allies would fight on until such time as the Axis powers surrendered unconditionally. In fact, Italy was allowed to surrender in 1943 with some conditions, but German capitulated unconditionally in May 1945, and Japan surrendered unconditionally (saving the person and institution of the Emperor) in September 1945.
