1. a. a signal sounded in the evening on the drum, bugle, or trumpet, shortly before taps, alerting military personnel to repair to their quarters.
b. an evening entertainment of music and military exercises performed by military personnel, often given by torch or other artificial light.
2. a rapid rhythmic tapping, as in a drumbeat.
