field artillery artillery consisting of cannon, rocket, or surface-to-surface missile launchers that are sufficiently mobile to accompany fielded troops. Field artillery is divided into three groups based on the bore of ammunition. Light field artillery uses ammunition of 120 millimeters or less; medium uses 121–160 millimeters, and heavy artillery uses ammunition of 161–210 millimeters or greater.
