congressional oversight the supervision by the Congress of governmental agencies and other bodies, such as the military. Congressional review is conducted mainly by standing committees of the House and Senate, but also by panels convened for a special purpose, such as the one that held hearings on the Iran-Contra Affair. In such committees members of Congress gather information and dictate the preferred course of action.
