War Powers Resolution a law passed by Congress on November 7, 1973, overruling an October 23, 1973 veto by President
Richard M. Nixon, to “insure that the collective judgment of both the Congress and the President” would apply to the use of armed forces in hostilities. Established after the
Vietnam War and during the
Watergate crisis, it was widely disputed, and Congress abandoned it by the end President
Ronald Reagan's administration.
