Veterans Bureau

The Oxford Essential Dictionary of the U.S. Military | 2001 | Copyright

Veterans Bureau an organization for veterans of American wars established in 1921 under President Warren G. Harding. Given direct authority to construct veteran hospitals, the Bureau's first director, Charles R. Forbes, oversaw the building of veterans' hospitals that were free of safety hazards. In addition, he conceived of treating separate illnesses at separate facilities rather than caring for all patients together at one hospital. The Veterans Bureau, despite scandals, set a standard for veterans' hospitals built later. It was succeeded by the Veterans Administration. See Veterans Affairs, Department of.
