Urrea, José de

Urrea, José de (1797–1849) a Mexican general, born in the presidio of Tucson (now Arizona, who fought in numerous battles with Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna in the Texas War of Independence. He was opposed to the withdrawal of Mexican troops after the battle of San Jacinto, and was later appointed commandant general of the departments of Sinaloa and Sonora. Passed over for appointment to governor in 1837, he initiated several revolts. He fought against the United States in the Mexican War (1846–48).
