Trent affair the seizing of two Confederate commissioners from the British ship
Trent by Captain
Charles Wilkes in the U.S. warship
San Jacinto, while the men were enroute to Europe with the aim of raising support for the Confederacy. The seizure of the men, in November, 1861, without bringing the ship to port was seen as a violation of the laws of the sea, and applauded in the Union but the source of indignation in Britain, which threatened to side with and support the Confederacy. The conflict was resolved through diplomatic channels and the men were released in January 1862.
