Torbert, Alfred Thomas Archimedes (1833–1880) Union army officer and diplomat. Born in Delaware, Torbert graduated from West Point in 1855 and went into the infantry. When the Civil War began he was ordered to New Jersey to recruit volunteers, and was appointed colonel of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He commanded that unit during the Peninsular campaign in 1862 before getting a brigade in the VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac. He was promoted to brigadier general and fought in all the key eastern battles through Gettysburg (1863). In April 1864 he took command of the First Cavalry Division under Philip H. Sheridan. Torbert performed admirably with Sheridan, distinguishing himself on many occasions and rising to the rank of major general of regulars and command of the Army of the Shenandoah. After the war Torbert served in diplomatic posts in El Salvador, Cuba, and Paris. He was lost at sea off the coast of Florida sailing to visit business interests in Mexico.
