Taliaferro, William Booth ˈtäləvər (1822–1898) Confederate army officer. A Virginian, Taliaferro practiced law and was an active member of the militia. In 1847 he joined the Eleventh U.S. Infantry and served in the Mexican War (1846–48). He then served in the Virginia House of Delegates and simultaneously rose in the state militia, becoming a major general. In 1858 he took command of the militia at Harpers Ferry after John Brown's failed raid. In the Civil War, he was a colonel in the Twenty-third Virginia Infantry, fighting with Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. He was also at the Second Battle of Bull Run and at Fredericksburg (both 1862). In 1863 he successfully directed the defense of Battery Wagner, South Carolina. Promoted to major general in 1865, he led a division in the war's final battles in North Carolina.
