Tabasco a state in southeastern Mexico that was the target of an expedition by the American Gulf Squadron, commanded by Commodore
Matthew C. Perry, in October, 1846. He took the capital Villahermosa without difficulty but further up the Tabasco River his mission had to be abandoned because of guerrilla attacks and outbreaks of yellow fever among his men.
