Stamp Act an act passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765 to obtain money from the American colonies in order to pay debts incurred during the
French and Indian War (1754–63), maintain British naval forces, and support a colonial military force. It required the use of stamps on all legal and commercial papers, pamphlets, newspapers, almanacs, and cards and dice. American colonists protested and rioted against the act. It was annulled in March 1766.
