St. Mihiel offensive the first independent operation of the newly organized U.S. First Army during
World War I. The objective was a German salient into the Allied position at St. Mihiel, near Verdun, northern France. On September 12th, 1918, forces under Gen.
John J. Pershing began an attack that cut off the salient, though it resulted in the capture of fewer Germans than was expected because they had found a way to retreat to stronger positions.
