Springfield Armory

Springfield Armory established at Springfield, Massachusetts in 1777 to manufacture cartridges and gun carriages for Gen. George Washington's Revolutionary army. In 1794 President Washington chose Springfield as the site for one of two federal armories, and the Springfield Armory quickly became known for its inventions and development of improved weaponry. When Harpers Ferry was destroyed during the Civil War, Springfield became the only federal manufacturing site for small arms until the twentieth century. The last small arm developed at Springfield was the M-14 (now the M-21). In 1968, the Department of Defense closed the installation.
