Speer, Albert (1905–81) German architect and
Nazi minister of armaments and war production. Speer joined the Nazi party in 1931, after hearing
Adolf Hitler speak, and soon became Hitler's personal architect. He conceived a grandiose project for rebuilding Berlin, which never came to fruition. In 1942 he was named minister of armaments and munitions; a year later the position was extended to cover war production. In this capacity Speer headed a system of slave labor, drawn largely from the concentration camps, that produced war materiel for Germany during
World War II. Speer confessed his guilt at the postwar
Nuremberg Trials and served a twenty-year prison sentence.
