South Mountain, Battle of

South Mountain, Battle of a battle between Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's forces and Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. McClellan's forces attacked Lee's army on September 14, 1862, at South Mountain, near Burkittsville, Maryland. After suffering heavy casualties, the Confederate army retreated, resulting in a Union victory.
