Silver Star Medal U.S. military decoration awarded for “gallantry in action not warranting the award of a Medal of Honor or the Distinguished Service Cross” against an armed enemy of the United States. The wearing of a small silver star on the service ribbon for the campaign in which valor was displayed was authorized by Congress on July 9, 1918, but the Silver Star Medal as such was not established until 1932. The Silver Star Medal may be awarded to any person serving with the U. S. Army.
