Shreve, Henry Miller (1785–1851) steamboat captain, marine architect, and military engineer. Shreve was born in New Jersey but moved with his family to Pennsylvania when very young. He began working on barges and keelboats on the Monongahela and eventually bought his own barge and became a wealthy trader. He helped design a larger, more powerful vessel, a sternwheeler, to compete with Robert Fulton's steamboat and from 1814 to 15 he brought supplies to Gen.
Andrew Jackson for the defense of
New Orleans. Shreve designed his own steamboat, the
Washington, which, despite early disastrous setbacks, eventually became the industry standard for luxury travel. In 1826 he became superintendent of western river improvement; he devised a ship to clear the Mississippi and the Ohio of floating logs and debris.
Shreve brought the first load of furs ever to reach Philadelphia from St. Louis; he himself brought them by wagon, so he could avoid the ruinous charges imposed by middlemen at Pittsburgh.
