Senate Armed Services Committee

Senate Armed Services Committee a committee of the U.S. Senate that was established by the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946, though it has roots dating back to Revolutionary times. The committee has broad responsibilities for the common defense and the departments of Defense, the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the Selective Service system, naval petroleum reserves (except in Alaska), national security aspects of nuclear energy, and strategic and critical materials related to defense. The committee operates through subcommittees that consider, for example, readiness, staffing, and the defense industry; it also drafts legislation that provides program authority for defense activities performed by the executive branch. Congress may create, alter, or abolish any office or program undertaken by the Pentagon, subject to presidential veto. Thus, the Armed Services Committee has a role in every activity related to national defense.
