Selective Service System the U.S. federal agency that organizes the mobilization of armed forces. Conscription was first used in the United States during the Civil War by both the North and South. Those who were able to could buy their way out of conscription, and the practice was abandoned once the war was over. Mandatory service was employed during World War I with the Selective Service Act of May 18, 1917. All men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty were required to register. Selective Service was not used during the peacetime following the war until 1940, and it was employed during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Selective Service was ended in 1973 and an all-volunteer military established in its place. Draft registration was reinstituted in 1980 for eighteen-year-old men.
