Santiago, Battle of a largely naval battle of the Spanish-American War in the summer of 1898, in which a fleet of battleships, under the command of Maj. Gen. William R. Shafter, destroyed the Spanish squadron of ships at Santiago de Cuba. As a result, the city was surrendered along with 28,000 Spanish troops and the eastern half of the island. This victory forced the Spanish government to propose peace negotiations.
