San Bernardino Straits one of the sites of the
Battle of Leyte Gulf south of Luzon, during
World War II. In October 1944, American forces invaded the Japanese-occupied island of Luzon in the Philippines. The Japanese Imperial Navy mounted the largest naval battle ever fought (October 23–26) in an attempt to keep the island. After distracting the U.S. Navy by attacking north of Luzon, the Japanese rounded the island through the San Bernardino Straits unopposed. The Americans fought back by air and sea, defeating the Japanese and clearing the way for U.S. occupation of the Philippines.
