SEAL

SEAL originating in 1943 with volunteers from the Navy's Construction Battalions (Seabees), the first two SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) teams were commissioned in 1962 in the Pacific Fleet (SEAL Team ONE) and in the Atlantic Fleet (SEAL Team TWO) and charged with conducting unconventional warfare, counter-guerilla warfare, and clandestine operations in blue and brown water environments. In 1983, existing underwater demolition teams(UDTs; organized in 1947) were redesignated as SEAL teams and/or SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams, making the redesignated SEALs responsible for hydrographic reconnaissance and underwater demolition missions. At the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, California, the Naval Special Warfare Command (commissioned in 1987) prepares U.S. Navy Special Forces to execute their assigned missions and develops special operations strategy, doctrine, and tactics.
