Rosser, Thomas Lafayette

Rosser, Thomas Lafayette (1836–1910) Confederate army officer, born in Virginia but raised in Texas, Rosser enlisted in the Confederate army immediately after the bombardment of Fort Sumter (1861). He rose steadily through the ranks, rising to major general, and fought at a number of major engagements, including Gettysburg (1863), and he won the last major cavalry victory of the Army of Northern Virginia (1865). When the Spanish-American War (1898) broke out, Rosser was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and trained several regiments.
