Rapido River

Rapido River a river near the town of Cassino, Italy, that served as the German line of defense in 1944, during World War II. The U.S. Thirty-Sixth Infantry Division attempted to cross the frigid, raging river on January 20–21, 1944. The attack was mainly meant to divert German forces from Allied troops landing at Anzio, and ended in defeat with heavy U.S. casualties.
