Ramseur, Stephen Dodson (1837–1864) Confederate army officer, born in North Carolina. Ramseur was an ardent defender of slavery; in 1861 he resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and within a few weeks had received an appointment in the Confederate army, rapidly rising to the position of major of artillery. In 1862 he was commissioned colonel of the 49th North Carolina Infantry; in that position he was seriously wounded at Malvern Hill in July of that year. Promoted to brigadier general, he earned a reputation as a fearless and daring leader. His performance at Chancellorsville (1863) won praise from Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. He also served memorably at Spotsylvania (1864). Named to take over Gen. Jubal Early's division, Ramseur reached the rank of major general in 1864. He was killed in battle at Cedar Creek, Virginia.

Appointed one day after his twenty-seventh birthday, Ramseur was the youngest West Point alumnus in the Confederate army to achieve the rank of major general.
