Purple Heart Medal U.S. military decoration awarded for death or wounds inflicted by forces hostile to the United States. To qualify the wound must have necessitated treatment by a medical officer. The Purple Heart Medal was established on February 22, 1932 as a revival of the Badge of Military Merit originally created by Gen.
George Washington in 1782.
Before the creation of the Purple Heart, the receipt of wounds in combat was recognized by the award of a small chevron worn on the lower sleeve of the uniform coat.
