Porter, David Dixon (1813–91) Union naval officer, born in Pennsylvania. The son of David Porter, Porter went to sea at a young age. His early career included a two-year stint as a commander in the merchant marine. In 1855 he returned to the U.S. Navy. He was contemplating resuming a civilian career when the Civil War gave him the opportunity to test his mettle. Defying orders, in 1861 he sailed to Pensacola to reinforce Fort Pickens; in 1862 he recommended his adoptive brother, David Farragut, to lead the siege at New Orleans, at which Porter played a small role. He later commanded the Union gunboat forces on the Mississippi and played a more important role in the victory at Vicksburg (1863). In the postwar years he served as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.)
