Old Northwest Territory the first territorial government set up by the United States. It was created in 1787 and was officially called “the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio.” Hostile Indians limited settlement initially, but Gen.
Anthony Wayne's victory over their forces at
Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794, opened up all the territory to settlement, and growth exploded. In 1800, the Indiana Territory was created out of land west of Kentucky, and in 1802 the Michigan Territory was established to break the region into more manageable areas of governance. The original territory became the state of Ohio in 1803.
