New York, Battle of a critical British victory in 1776, which, had it been fully realized, might have seriously crippled the rebels. As it was, the Americans, under
George Washington's command, committed mistakes and suffered significant losses. The British sent their largest force yet—40,000 soldiers and sailors under brothers Gen.
William Howe and Adm.
Richard Howe—to re-establish Royal authority and regain a harbor, of which they had neither between New Hampshire and Georgia. After landing on fortless Staten Island on July 2, Gen. Howe, using the same strategy he had unsuccessfully employed at
Bunker Hill (1775), routed the Americans out of their Long Island earthworks, forcing them to retreat to Manhattan by late August and then to Westchester County on November 16, as the last American position on the island, Fort Washington, fell.
