National Security Act a law signed on July 26, 1947, to reorganize and centralize the military after
World War II. It established a
National Security Council, which included the newly created Office of the Secretary of Defense to coordinate policy, and the
Central Intelligence Agency to evaluate intelligence relating to national security. It also gave the newly named U.S. Air Force co-equal status with the army and the navy. As amended in 1949, it created the
Department of Defense and institutionalized the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.
