Nashville, Battle of a devastating 1864 defeat of Gen. John B. Hood's troops at the hands of Gen. George H. Thomas's Union forces. In November, Hood surrounded John M. Schofield's forces near Spring Hill, Tennessee, but Schofield managed to escape. Hood, furious, began an ill-advised chase to the outskirts of Nashville, where he positioned his ill-fated troops, outnumbered as they were almost two to one by Thomas's men. Thomas finally attacked on December 15–16, routing the Confederates and taking 4,500 prisoners. This was the last major clash west of the Appalachians.
