Mullany, James Robert Madison məˈlānē (1818–87) naval officer, born in New York City. He commanded the side-wheel steamer
Bienville (1862–65) during the
Civil War, capturing a total of eleven blockade runners. He served under
Samuel F. Du Pont in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and under
David Farragut in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. Farragut commended him for gallant conduct during the battle of
Mobile Bay (1864), at which Mullany was severely wounded, resulting in the loss of an arm. (He temporarily commanded the steam sloop
Oneida during that battle.) He retired in 1879, a rear admiral. During the
Mexican War (1846–48) Mullany participated in the naval expedition to
Tabasco.
