Montgomery, Bernard Law (1887–1976) British field marshal and Allied commander during
World War II, known as Monty. Montgomery first gained fame in 1942 with his defeat of the forces of
Erwin Rommel at the battle of
El Alamein, following which he pursued the German armies across North Africa to their surrender in Tunisia (1943). He led the Allied invasion of
Normandy (1944) under the command of Gen.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, with whom he had a contentious relationship throughout the war. In Britain he was hailed as another Wellington and made viscount of Alamein in 1946.
