Mohawk an Iroquois-speaking Indian tribe, one of the member of the Five Nations, located along the Mohawk River in upstate New York. Expelled by the French and their Indian allies from the St. Lawrence Valley in the early 17th century, the Mohawks subsequently allied themselves with the British colonists in
King Philip's War (1675-76) and in the Anglo-French conflicts of the 18th century.
