Merriam, Henry Clay (1837–1912) Union army officer, born in Houlton, Maine. Merriam led the assault on Fort Blakely (1865), where his courage and gallantry contributed to the capture of 6,000 Confederates and for which he was awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor. Merriam had previously demonstrated bravery at the battles of
Antietam and
Fredericksburg (both 1862) and been cited for gallantry in the attack on
Port Hudson, Louisiana (1863).
